HIPAA/Privacy - Session 1 (1:00 pm - 3:00 pm)
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), also known as the Kennedy-Kassebaum bill, was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1996. HIPAA sets national standards for the use and disclosure of Protected Health Information (PHI) which is any information about health status, provision of health care, or payment for health care that can be linked to an individual. A major goal of the Privacy Rule is to assure that individuals’ health information is properly protected. The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has responsibility for implementing and enforcing the Privacy Rule. This presentation will provide participants an overview of HIPAA, Patient Rights, Who and What is covered, PHI, Enforcement and Penalties, and Administrative Requirements.
