Food for Thought
As a CHR, you may be behind the wheel as much as you are behind the computer monitor. Before heading out, don’t forget to pack drinks and a snack. Fill a thermos or insulated sports bottle with your favorite cold drink. It will stay cool for hours and prevent the temptation of those "super-size" fast food or C-store sodas. Drinking enough fluids is always important. In the winter, dry air and heaters make fluids essential to prevent dehydration; while the summer heat makes liquids crucial to cool the body. Eight 8 oz. servings of fluids, especially water, is a good guideline for daily intake.
For those ‘salty snack’ days, bring baked tortilla chips, pretzels or whole-grain crackers. Don’t pack the whole bag, just a handful in a plastic baggie will do. If you’re watching your weight, try the new smaller snack packs that come in 100 calorie portions. If chewy is for you, pack low-fat string cheese and dried fruit, such as raisins, apricots, and cranberries. Vegetables that travel well include: green pepper strips, carrot sticks, celery sticks or broccoli & cauliflower florets.
Finally, that sweet tooth… apples, bananas, grapes, peaches, plums, pears and nectarines are great for traveling. Homemade muffins or fruit breads are a crumbly, yet satisfying choice; just make sure to pack an extra napkin or two! With a little advanced planning you can munch on healthy foods you enjoy, wherever your job takes you. Travel safe and eat healthy!
